Imagine U at WSU

We had an amazing day at Graham-Kapowsin High School today! Washington State University came to the campus with professors and students and gave our kids a taste of what it might be like to be a student on a college campus...namely, WSU! The professors and students visited the classrooms and talked about the particular fields that they worked or studied in. I actually went to a presentation by a guy that is originally from Mexico. Juan is now studying Music Composition at WSU. He has started a Mariachi band and club on campus. Juan visited the Women's Choir class and showed videos of Mariachi music and talked about the five different instruments that a Mariachi band consists of...violin, guitaron (large guitar), guitar, trumpet and I am not remembering the 5th one right now. Juan also put on his sombrero and sang a few songs for us. It was way fun! The other classes were visited by professors and students that are in the fields of Agriculture, Engineering, Business, Food and Clothing, Biology, etc. We had a great assembly in the middle of the day with a fun visit from the Cougar himself, Butch. They also brought a bunch of t-shirts that they gave away to different students and to all of the faculty members. In addition, they had fun washable tatoos and pens for everyone. I think it was a greeat way to help our students connect with the idea of going to college. There was a lot of energy at GKHS today and we all had a total blast! Then tonight, we had a parent night at the school where they talked about admission requirements and financial aid information. We also were lucky enough to have a panel of students that shared about their experiences at WSU. A former student that graduated in 2008, Rachel Asklar, was part of the panel. It was so fun to reconnect with Rachel. Although I was technically not her "counselor," I got to be really tight with Rachel when she was at GKHS. So, it was super fun to get caught up with her. This, my friends, is a day in the life of a high school counselor! :)
